Warm air washed over Lance, relieving the chill in his bones, as he stepped into the house after Wynn. His feet felt like solid ice in his dress shoes. The jacket Shaun had brought with him when he’d returned with the keys had kept some of the cold out but not enough.

It’d been stupid of him to insist on going to the tower. Both he and Shaun would probably end up with pneumonia all because he couldn’t handle his emotions. Mother had always said he wasn’t strong enough to make his own decisions. Even his father had to have agreed for him to have put such a long hold on his inheritance.

He’d admit that since coming back to Gaynor Beach he hadn’t exactly proven anyone wrong. If anything, all he’d done was make one mistake after another. Starting with losing his virginity to a stranger who fished him out of the ocean when he was too drunk to stay on solid ground. Then being the catalyst for ruining everything Wynn was trying to build here. And ending with…

No. He wasn’t stupid enough to put that thought out into the universe. It was too soon for him to feel anything more than appreciation for everything Wynn had done for Lance. Even the attraction was understandable because the man was so sexy in that reserved, calming way. Maybe others wouldn’t find it sexy, but when your life seemed to always be on a tilt having that steady presence at your back was the greatest feeling.

Lance kept his eyes down, glancing up through his lashes to get a read on Wynn’s expression.

He supposed it was par for the course that the steady, stoic nature that he loved about Wynn, would also be something that left him in the dark about how the man felt. When Wynn finished hanging up his coat, he reached over to help Lance out of his, hanging it on the coat rack by the door.

Once Wynn finished that he took Lance’s hand in his and led them toward the stairs. Lance followed like a child. He winced at an image that didn’t help the insecurities he held over their age difference.

Did Wynn think of him like that? Like he was a kid that needed to be coddled?

When they reached the top of the stairs, Wynn continued into his room. Lance hesitated for just a moment, before the exhaustion had him giving in. They walked into Wynn’s master bathroom, which was smaller than one of his closets at home. There was enough room for a separate shower from the tub, but that was the only extravagance afforded the room.

Wynn let go of his hand to turn the shower on, waiting while the temperature increased. He doubted Wynn would have brought Lance in here to watch him take a shower, so Lance took off his suit jacket before working on the buttons of his dress shirt. His shoulders slumped when Wynn walked out of the room, the door slowly closing behind him until it was slightly ajar.
